Somos Primos is a website with more than a decades’ worth of news and resources pertaining to Latino genealogy. The site started out as a quarterly newsletter in 1990, but when that became too unruly, founder Mimi Lozano moved the information online in 2000.
Genealogy, knowing where we come from and how we got to be where we are, is pivotal in helping us understand where we’re going, Lozano told me once. In her own life, she said that genealogy played an important role in helping her to better understand her family, and thus herself, and enabled her to pursue a good life for her own family.
The website states as its mission:
The goal is to awaken Latinos to the fact that we are walking in the footsteps of our ancestors. Whether that path is clear to our vision or not, we are in the midst of that road. It is imperative that we grasp the unique and individual part in world history, and especially United States history, that our grand-parents walked. The contributions of our ancestors are important to understand the many social issues of today.
If you have never checked the site out, do so. There’s plenty of information to keep you busy — it goes all the way back to 2000. You can receive emails for free when new resources are added to the site, click here.
