Más Wired interviewed Lalo Alcaraz, cartoonist and satirist extraordinary, about how his work has been amplified by technology. Since his days as a Berkeley graduate student, Alcaraz would promote his work via photocopied flyers.
Later, during the 1990s, he would fax copies of his fake anti-immigrant Hispanic organization to news outlets. When social media came onto the scene, he was ready to pounce on that technology as well. Census report: Latinos in the U.S.

The U.S. Census Bureau released an interesting report called “Who’s Hispanic in America?” that includes interesting statistics about Latinos in the U.S. Everything from population projections to age, profession, ethnic subgroup and maps are included.
Visualized data in the report include maps and charts that illustrate Latino growth over time, in different counties and states, as well comparative data for different sub-groups.

Vimeo now in Spanish, eyeing Latin America

Vimeo, the high quality video sharing site, is now available in Spanish, a move the company said was to attract more U.S. and Latin American Latinos. Spanish is already the second most spoken language on the site, according to a report.
According to Hispanic Business:
The Spanish-language users come primarily from countries such as the U.S., Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Colombia. The site attracts more than 70 million unique visitors per month and has almost 12 million registered users, according to Trainor.… more
Comedienne’s web series bends gender

Jesenia Bailey is a comedienne who recently launched her own web series. We spoke to her about “Becoming Ricardo,” which follows an actress who finds success pretending to be a man, and the subsequent fallout when she’s discovered.

YouTube becoming a source for news

A study from The Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism called “YouTube & News: A New Kind of Visual News” reports on the ways in which people are consuming news on YouTube. First, the report notes that citizen journalism is prominent on YouTube — at the expense of attribution:
The data reveal that a complex, symbiotic relationship has developed between citizens and news organizations on YouTube, a relationship that comes close to the continuous journalistic “dialogue” many observers predicted would become the new journalism online.… more
Latino filmmaker to make X-Men movie

When he was young, filmmaker Miguel Ferrer didn’t know that making movies was a career. Although at the time he was, writing, directing and editing videos VHS to VHS in Miami, it was not until he was much older, once he got to college, that he realized he could make movies for a living. And he’s been making movies ever since.
“Nobody ever told me that you could actually be a filmmaker as a career,” Ferrer said. “In 2004 my mom and dad gave me a videocamera and I started making shorts.… more
